Coin-operated vending machines date from at least the first century BC. Holy-water was the product on offer and the vending machine used to dispense it was invented (or at least first described by) by Hero the Greek mathematician. Temple visitors would place a five-drachma coin in the machine. The weight of the coin was used to open the valve allowing the water to flow. Customers received a measured amount of holy water so they could be ritually cleansed before entering the temple.
